This is the photo taken by T. Taylor Warren [deceased Oct 2008] that decided the winner of the first '500'. #73 Johnny Beauchamp in a Holman-Moody built 1959 Thunderbird, #42 Lee Petty in an Oldsmobile, and [top] Joe Weatherly [1959 Chevrolet #48] who was actually almost two laps down, but thought he was racing for the win. Weatherly finished fifth one lap down. Ground breaking for the Daytona International Speedway didn't take place until November 25, 1957. The first Daytona 500 was run on February 22, 1959, with Lee Petty getting the win over Johnny Beauchamp, after track officials reviewed photos of the finish for three days.
